Remaster Your Makeup Routine

Skin changes as you mature. Makeup that used to enhance may not now. How to evolve these areas:

Liquid foundation can be more forgiving than powder. A new shade may match skin tone better. Make sure to test on the back of your hand first. (Opté makes foundation obsolete. See the right hand column.)

As skin gets drier with age, try powder, rather than cream. For the right shade, pinch cheeks. Match that.

Lighter shades work better under eyes.

Use fewer darker shades, as they can make lips look thin. Use a lip liner, and top with a shade that’s a bit bolder than your natural color.

Go for a bright, open, more youthful look. Use a light bottom eyeliner. Deep brown, not black. Angled brush, not hard pencil. White or nude liner on bottom lashes.

Enhance eyelashes

Instead of mascara, try an eyelash curler, then Vaseline, aloe vera or vitamin E oil for fuller, longer lashes.

If eyebrows get thin or sparse, fill them in with a brow powder.

Take Care of
Maturing Skin

Aging skin needs more care as hormones change and skin thins.

The One Necessity:
Sun Protection

At all ages, women (and men!) should use SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen every day, in all weather. Apply to face, neck, chest. Reapply after 80 minutes, after getting wet or sweating a lot or toweling dry.

Sun Protection Checklist
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Rash-guard swimwear
  • Sunscreen
  • Minimal peak-time sun exposure (10am-2pm)
  • UV moisturizer

Other Daily Steps:

  • Wash your hands before washing your face
  • Wash your washcloth
  • Reduce cleansing from 2x to 1x per day
  • Exfoliate. But don't overdo it
  • Try a toner
  • Moisturize daily

Even Out Your
Skin Tone

A key sign of aging is uneven skin tone. Work on reducing hyperpigmentation (dark spots). (The Opté Beauty Wand is our favorite method.)

De-pigmenting topicals vary in efficacy and safety. Many—hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid—are prescription-only.

Hydroquinone 2% is over-the-counter. The 4% solution is by prescription.

Retinoid, or Vitamin-A derivatives, speeds cell turnover and collagen growth to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and to fade brown spots. Pair retinoid with sunscreen due to increased sun sensitivity.

Other alternatives are makeup (easy, not as effective as you’d like) and skin resurfacing with a dermatologist (recovery time, cost and variable results). And there’s the NEW Opté Beauty Wand. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Remember Hands, Feet and Body Skin

For supple skin all over, use an all-over routine. Below the neck, skin layers are thicker. They need less maintenance than your face. But NOT zero maintenance.

Start with an exfoliator or polish as needed. Every area needs its own exfoliation rate. Experiment.
Use daily a mild, non-detergent body cleanser. Find one that works best for you.
Follow up with a hydrating lotion. Apply daily after bathing to damp skin.

Especially for Hands

Backs of hands can be an age “tell.” Boost suppleness with alpha hydroxyl (AHA) moisturizers. Consider using moisturizing gloves at night while you sleep.

Especially for Feet

For calluses and roughness, try a foot file, used on dry, not damp, skin. Or a pumice stone or buffer. For softness, try AHA foot creams, at-home foot peel serums or a foot mask. For cracked heels, use a heavy ointment, like coconut, aloe or petroleum jelly.

The REAL fountain of youth: Exercise slows cellular aging.

Frequent cardiovascular activity can directly improve your skin:

  • Increased blood flow sends oxygen and nutrients to the skin surface, boosting radiance and collagen production.
  • Sweating dilates pores, expelling dirt and oil.
  • Regular exercise lowers the stress and cortisol levels that can make acne and eczema worse.

Two hours and thirty minutes of moderate exercise, or one hour and fifteen minutes of vigorous exercise, per week leads to cleaner skin and reduces your risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Eat Skin-Healthy Foods

Avoid consuming foods that age your skin.

Sodium can cause water retention, leading to swelling and bloating. Salt contributes to high blood pressure, affecting collagen.

Sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin proteins in your skin, producing free radicals. This increases skin inflammationand breaks down cells and vitamins.

Refined carbohydrates damage wrinkle-fighting proteins like collagen.

Alcohol dehydrates your body, leading to reddened, blotchy and bloated skin.

Margarine includes trans fats that dehydrate your skin. A higher intake of margarine has also been associated with increased wrinkling.

Agave contains a high proportion of fructose, which breaks down collagen more efficiently than regular sugar.

Get Restorative

Skin naturally regenerates itself at night. Sufficient deep sleep is imperative. Poor sleep can lead to collagen breakdown and result in dullness, accentuated fine lines and wrinkles.

Keep a regular bedtime. Consistent sleep and wake times ease your body’s ability to fall and stay asleep.

Exercise. Exhaust your body during the day to prepare it for rest at night.

Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening.

Drink fewer fluids close to bedtime. Waking to go to the bathroom interrupts sleep cycles.

Turn off electronics an hour before bed. The unnatural light disrupts your sleep cycle and stimulates your brain when it needs to rest.

Don’t drink alcohol before bed. Alcohol can wake you up as it starts to wear off, interrupting the REM cycle (Rapid Eye Movement sleep, which is when you dream).

Skin-Saving Sleep Tricks:

  1. Reduce facial puffiness by adding an extra pillow. By slightly elevating your head, you can prevent fluid from pooling in your skin.
  2. Reduce skin abrasion and irritation with softer pillowcases. Choose cotton with a high thread count, or satin or silk.
  3. Nourish your lips and hands. Use nights to focus on moisturizing and hydrating.
5 minutes

Your NEW Opté Beauty Wand morning routine takes only about 5 minutes. So you can probably sleep a little longer. CLICK HERE to try it without risk and find out.

Get Happy!

Stress, anxiety and anger add years to your skin. The stress hormone cortisol causes inflammation that breaks down collagen, triggering facial redness and acne flare-ups.

To combat daily stressors, work to reduce your stress level:

  • Name the items around you for three minutes to distract from crises.
  • To slow your heart down and refocus, splash your face with cold water. Take seven deep breaths, and splash again.
  • Try a one-minute meditation. There are several self-guided meditation apps on the internet or on smartphones to check in with yourself at any time of the day.

During crises, adopt cognitive-skills practices. Try “cognitive reframing”: control your emotions by reframing negative events positively.

If you wave to a friend across the street and she doesn’t wave back, don’t jump to conclusions. Instead, assume she simply hasn’t seen you. Reframing negative incidents dissipates pain and anger much faster and reduces long-term stress.

Time to Act!

You can’t stop the clock—but you can control how you apply your makeup, the way you care for the skin on your face and body, what you eat, how much you exercise, and your response to stress.

Take a comprehensive approach to your skin appearance by striving for a healthy body and a healthy mind.
